Short answer: yes, for some problems, and no for others. A speaker cleaner is a useful tool, not magic, and it helps to know which of those two situations you’re in before you start.
What’s actually happening
A phone speaker is a small cone or membrane that moves back and forth to push air. Low notes make it move further than high notes at the same loudness. So when a cleaner plays a low tone at full volume, the cone is doing big, fast pushes against whatever sits in front of it.
Water in the speaker grille is held in place by surface tension. Those tiny holes in the mesh are just the right size for a droplet to sit there and seal the gap. The repeated air pushes break that seal and nudge the drop outward. Do that a few dozen times and most of it is gone, which is why you sometimes see little beads of water appear on the grille while the tone plays.
Why 165 Hz?
There’s no official standard. 165 Hz became the go-to because it’s low enough to move the cone a lot but still high enough that a small phone speaker can actually play it loudly. Go much lower and a phone speaker barely produces anything. Some tools, including ours, sweep a little around it, from about 165 to 230 Hz, because every phone is built slightly differently.
What it’s good at
- Droplets stuck in the grille after rain, a splash or a shower
- Loose dust and light lint sitting on the mesh
- Getting the last bit of muffled sound out after a phone has already dried
What it can’t do
- Remove water that got inside the phone itself
- Fix a torn or damaged speaker
- Pull out lint that’s really packed in (a soft brush or putty is better for that)
- Fix a problem that’s actually software or a Bluetooth mix-up
So, worth trying?
Definitely, because it’s free, takes a minute and won’t hurt a working speaker at normal volume. Just don’t keep running it over and over if nothing changes after three cycles. At that point the problem is somewhere the sound can’t reach. Our speaker not working checklist will help you narrow it down.
